Phren Gala
In Ancient Greek philosophy, Phren - φρήν is the location of thought, or contemplation.
Phren Gala is in honour of Athan Mirmikidis, the late Director of Heyder & Shears. After a 2.5-year fight, Athan recently lost his battle with GBM (Glioblastoma Multiform) a very aggressive brain cancer for which there is currently no cure.

One of Athan’s last wishes was to raise awareness and funds for much-needed research – and ultimately to change the dire outcomes of those diagnosed with this horrific disease, and give hope back to patients and their families.
In order to fulfil this final wish Phren will be hosting events to champion the cause of those living with brain cancer, remember those we have lost, and contribute funds needed to find a cure.

Our inaugural event is the 2023 Phren Gala where we are bringing together the expert skills of the Perth event and hospitality community that Athan so passionately loved.

The evening will comprise a formal sit-down dinner at the WA Museum Boola Bardip where cuisine inspired by Athan’s Greek heritage and wines from Plantagenet winery will be proudly showcased by Heyder and Shears. This feast of the senses will be accompanied by live entertainment, a live auction, silent auction and single prize raffle.

A portion of the cost of a ticket will be tax deductible. Profits from ticket sales, auctions and raffle will be donated to the Brain Cancer Centre.

The Brain Cancer Centre was founded by Carrie's Beanies 4 Brain Cancer Foundation & established in partnership with WEHI (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute) with support from the Victorian Government. They have been working closely together for many years focused on investing in brain cancer research with a shared vision: that one day no lives will be lost to brain cancer. The Brain Cancer Centre is the culmination of this collaboration.
We are unified with them in the collective mission: giving brain cancer patients and their families a brighter future and to ultimately find a cure for this devastating disease. The launch of The Brain Cancer Centre has enlivened this shared vision. Continued investment is crucial over the long term to keep bringing together the best and brightest minds, and give hope to all affected by brain cancer.
"I want to see a world where no family has to lose someone they love to brain cancer."
